From Face Scan to Perfect Frame: Cubitts' LiDAR-Powered Fitting App

Cubitts' philosophy is that glasses should fit perfectly. We built them a native iOS app that uses LiDAR to capture a precise 3D model of each customer's face — recommending the right frame size, enabling virtual try-on, and generating bespoke custom frames cut to exact measurements.

Cubitts is a British eyewear brand with a clear philosophy: glasses should fit perfectly. They design, manufacture, and sell spectacle frames — from ready-to-wear sizes to fully bespoke frames cut to individual measurements — through their network of UK retail stores.

Every Cubitts store. Thousands of perfect fits.

The app is now the standard fitting tool across all Cubitts retail stores, used for every customer interaction from frame size recommendations to bespoke orders. By connecting LiDAR scanning directly to the manufacturing pipeline, Cubitts scaled a previously manual, time-intensive process into a consistent in-store experience — driving thousands of sales through the system.

✕ The Problem

Customers were guessing their frame size

Cubitts' entire brand is built on the idea that glasses should fit perfectly. But without a way to measure faces accurately, even in-store customers were estimating their size — leading to returns, remakes, and frames that never quite sat right. The bespoke service, which produces frames cut to individual measurements, was difficult to scale without a precise, repeatable measurement process that any store staff member could run.

✓ The Solution

A LiDAR scanning app with two modes: fit recommendation and bespoke

We built a native iOS app that uses the LiDAR sensor and Face ID camera to capture a millimetre-accurate 3D model of the customer's head. The app runs two modes: a standard fitting mode that recommends the correct frame size, and a bespoke mode that generates a CNC machining file for a custom-manufactured frame.

  • 01LiDAR + Face ID camera pipeline capturing a precise 3D model of the customer's head
  • 02Frame size recommendation engine mapping face measurements to Cubitts' size range
  • 033D virtual try-on rendering the full Cubitts frame range on the customer's scanned head
  • 04Bespoke mode: ultra-precise measurements → CNC file generation → sent to manufacturing
  • 053D rendering of all store inventory items for a smooth, visual buying experience
  • 06Shopify integration handling the full checkout flow from frame selection to payment

Core capabilities that make this product work in the wild.

FIRST POINT

LiDAR Face Scanning

A custom scanning pipeline built on iPhone's LiDAR and Face ID sensors captures a millimetre-accurate 3D model of the customer's head in seconds — the foundation for both size recommendation and bespoke frame generation.

SECOND POINT

Frame Size Recommendation

Precise face measurements are mapped against Cubitts' full frame size range to give customers a definitive size recommendation — eliminating guesswork and reducing returns.

THIRD POINT

Bespoke Frame Generation

The bespoke mode translates ultra-precise scan data into a CNC machining file sent directly to Cubitts' manufacturing line — enabling custom frames cut to exact individual measurements at scale.

FOURTH POINT

3D Virtual Try-On & Checkout

Customers see every Cubitts frame rendered on their own 3D head model, then complete purchase through a Shopify-integrated checkout — all without leaving the app.

Custom 3D Technology, Built Under Startup Pressure

STEP 01

Discovery & 3D Research

Mapped the full fitting workflow with Cubitts' in-store team to understand what measurements mattered for frame fit, and researched the LiDAR capabilities of Face ID hardware to define what accuracy was achievable.

STEP 02

Scanning Engine

Built a custom LiDAR scanning pipeline in Swift — proprietary technology that captures a detailed 3D head model in seconds using the iPhone's Face ID camera array, with measurement accuracy sufficient for CNC frame manufacturing.

STEP 03

Virtual Try-On

Rendered the full Cubitts frame range on the customer's 3D head model in real time — allowing customers to see exactly how each frame would sit on their face before buying.

STEP 04

Bespoke CNC Pipeline

Built the bespoke mode: translating face scan data into precise frame dimensions, then generating a CNC machining file in the correct format for Cubitts' manufacturing equipment — connecting digital measurement directly to physical production.

STEP 05

Shopify Integration & Rollout

Integrated the full Shopify checkout flow so customers could move from scan to purchase without leaving the app. Rolled out across all Cubitts retail locations with staff training and in-store hardware setup.

I think what sets them apart is the range of skills they bring to a project, as well as their level of knowledge.
